x86/boot/e820: Simplify append_e820_table() and remove restriction on single-entry tables
So append_e820_table() begins with this weird condition that checks 'nr_entries':

Firstly, 'nr_entries' has been an u32 since 2017 and cannot be negative.
Secondly, there's nothing inherently wrong with single-entry E820 maps,
especially in virtualized environments.
So remove this restriction and remove the __append_e820_table()
indirection.
Also:
- fix/update comments
- remove obsolete comments
This shrinks the generated code a bit as well:

So the e820.c file has a hodgepodge of __init and __initdata tag
placements:

x86/boot/e820: Rename gap_start/gap_size to max_gap_start/max_gap_start in e820_search_gap() et al
The PCI gap searching functions pass around pointers to the
gap_start/gap_size variables, which refer to the maximum
size gap found so far.
Rename the variables to say so, and disambiguate their namespace
from 'current gap' variables.

x86/boot/e820: Change e820_search_gap() to search for the highest-address PCI gap
Right now the main x86 function that determines the position and size
of the 'PCI gap', e820_search_gap(), has this curious property:
while (--idx >= 0) {

if (gap >= *gap_size) {
I.e. it will iterate the E820 table backwards, from its end to the beginning,
and will search for larger and larger gaps in the memory map below 4GB,
until it finishes with the table.
This logic will, should there be two gaps with the same size, pick the
one with the lower physical address - which is contrary to usual
practice that the PCI gap is just below 4GB.
Furthermore, the commit that introduced this weird logic 16 years ago:
3381959da5a0 ("x86: cleanup e820_setup_gap(), add e820_search_gap(), v2")

didn't even declare this change, the title says it's a cleanup,
and the changelog declares it as a preparatory refactoring
for a later bugfix:
809d9a8f93bd ("x86/PCI: ACPI based PCI gap calculation")
which bugfix was reverted only 1 day later without much of an
explanation, and was never reintroduced:
58b6e5538460 ("Revert "x86/PCI: ACPI based PCI gap calculation"")
So based on the Git archeology and by the plain reading of the
code I declare this '>=' change an unintended bug and side effect.
Change it to '>' again.
It should not make much of a difference in practice, as the
likelihood of having *two* largest gaps with exactly the same
size are very low outside of weird user-provided memory maps.

x86/boot/e820: Standardize e820 table index variable types under 'u32'
So we have 'idx' types of 'int' and 'unsigned int', and sometimes
we assign 'u32' fields such as e820_table::nr_entries to these 'int'
values.
While there's no real risk of overflow with these tables, make it
all cleaner by standardizing on a single type: u32.
This also happens to shrink the code a bit:

x86/boot/e820: Clean up confusing and self-contradictory verbiage around E820 related resource allocations
So the E820 code has a rather confusing area of code at around
e820__reserve_resources(), which is, by its plain reading,
rather self-contradictory. For example, the comment explaining
e820__reserve_resources() claims:
- '* Mark E820 reserved areas as busy for the resource manager'
By 'E820 reserved areas' one can naively conclude that it's
talking about E820_TYPE_RESERVED areas - while those areas
are treated in exactly the opposite fashion by do_mark_busy():

Ie. E820_TYPE_RESERVED areas are *not* marked busy for the
resource manager, because E820_TYPE_RESERVED areas are
device regions that might eventually be claimed by a device driver.
This type of confusion permeates this whole area of code,
making it exceedingly difficult to read (for me at least).
So untangle it bit by bit:
- Instead of talking about ambiguous 'reserved areas',
talk about 'E820 device address regions' instead,
and 'register'/'lock' them.
- The do_mark_busy() function is a misnomer as well, because despite
its name it 'does' nothing - it only determines what type
of resource handling an E820 type should receive from the
kernel. Rename it to e820_device_region() and negate its
meaning, to avoid the 'busy/reserved' confusion. Because
that's what this code is really about: filtering out
device regions such as E820_TYPE_RESERVED, E820_TYPE_PRAM,
E820_TYPE_PMEM, etc., and allowing them to be claimed
by device drivers later on.
- All other E820 regions (system regions) are registered and
locked early on, before the PCI resource manager does its
search for device BAR addresses, etc.
Also fix this somewhat misleading comment:

and explain that here we register artificial 'gap' resources
at the end of suspiciously sized RAM regions, as heuristics
to try to avoid buggy firmware with undeclared 'stolen RAM' regions:

Also improve the printout of this extra resource a bit: make the
message more unambiguous, and upgrade it from pr_debug() (where
very few people will see it), to pr_info() (where it will make
it into the syslog on default distro configs).
Also fix spelling and improve comment placement.
No change in functionality intended.

early_panic() is a pointless wrapper around panic():

It is a bit weird and inconsistent that the PCI gap is
advertised during bootup as 'mem'ory:

It's not really memory, it's a gap that PCI devices can decode
and use and they often do not map it to any memory themselves.
So advertise it for what it is, a gap:

x86/boot/e820: Print E820_TYPE_RAM entries as ... RAM entries
So it is a bit weird that the actual RAM entries of the E820 table
are not actually called RAM, but 'usable':
BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000000100000-0x000000007ffdbfff] 1.9 GB usable
'usable' is pretty passive-aggressive in that context and ambiguous,
most E820 entries denote 'usable' address ranges - reserved ranges
may be used by devices, or the platform.
Clarify and disambiguate this by making the boot log entry
explicitly say 'System RAM', like in /proc/iomem:

x86/boot/e820: Simplify the PPro Erratum #50 workaround
No need to print out the table - users won't really be able
to tell much from it anyway and the messages around this
erratum are unnecessarily obtuse.
Instead clearly inform the user that a 256 kB hole is being
punched in their memory map at the 1.75 GB physical address.
Not that there are many PPro users left. :-)

x86/acpi/boot: Correct acpi_is_processor_usable() check again
ACPI v6.3 defined a new "Online Capable" MADT LAPIC flag. This bit is
used in conjunction with the "Enabled" MADT LAPIC flag to determine if
a CPU can be enabled/hotplugged by the OS after boot.
Before the new bit was defined, the "Enabled" bit was explicitly
described like this (ACPI v6.0 wording provided):
"If zero, this processor is unusable, and the operating system
support will not attempt to use it"
This means that CPU hotplug (based on MADT) is not possible. Many BIOS
implementations follow this guidance. They may include LAPIC entries in
MADT for unavailable CPUs, but since these entries are marked with
"Enabled=0" it is expected that the OS will completely ignore these
entries.
However, QEMU will do the same (include entries with "Enabled=0") for
the purpose of allowing CPU hotplug within the guest.

Recent Linux topology changes broke the QEMU use case. A following fix
for the QEMU use case broke bare metal topology enumeration.
Rework the Linux MADT LAPIC flags check to allow the QEMU use case only
for guests and to maintain the ACPI spec behavior for bare metal.
Remove an unnecessary check added to fix a bare metal case introduced by
the QEMU "fix".

x86/hv: Add gitignore entry for generated header file
Commit
7bfe3b8ea6e3 ("Drivers: hv: Introduce mshv_vtl driver") added a
new generated header file for the offsets into the mshv_vtl_cpu_context
structure to be used by the low-level assembly code. But it didn't add
the .gitignore file to go with it, so 'git status' and friends will
mention it.
Let's add the gitignore file before somebody thinks that generated
header should be committed.

i3c: adi: Fix confusing cleanup.h syntax
Initializing automatic __free variables to NULL without need (e.g.
branches with different allocations), followed by actual allocation is
in contrary to explicit coding rules guiding cleanup.h:
"Given that the "__free(...) = NULL" pattern for variables defined at
the top of the function poses this potential interdependency problem the
recommendation is to always define and assign variables in one statement
and not group variable definitions at the top of the function when
__free() is used."
Code does not have a bug, but is less readable and uses discouraged
coding practice, so fix that by moving declaration to the place of
assignment.

bug: Let report_bug_entry() provide the correct bugaddr
report_bug_entry() always provides zero for bugaddr but could easily
extract the correct address from the provided bug_entry. Just do that to
have proper warning messages.
E.g. adding an artificial:

function generates this warning message:

perf/x86/intel: Fix NULL event dereference crash in handle_pmi_common()
handle_pmi_common() may observe an active bit set in cpuc->active_mask
while the corresponding cpuc->events[] entry has already been cleared,
which leads to a NULL pointer dereference.
This can happen when interrupt throttling stops all events in a group
while PEBS processing is still in progress. perf_event_overflow() can
trigger perf_event_throttle_group(), which stops the group and clears
the cpuc->events[] entry, but the active bit may still be set when
handle_pmi_common() iterates over the events.
The following recent fix:
7e772a93eb61 ("perf/x86: Fix NULL event access and potential PEBS record loss")
moved the cpuc->events[] clearing from x86_pmu_stop() to x86_pmu_del() and
relied on cpuc->active_mask/pebs_enabled checks. However,
handle_pmi_common() can still encounter a NULL cpuc->events[] entry
despite the active bit being set.
Add an explicit NULL check on the event pointer before using it,
to cover this legitimate scenario and avoid the NULL dereference crash.

When CONFIG_PM and CONFIG_PM_SLEEP are unset, SET_SYSTEM_SLEEP_PM_OPS()
and SET_RUNTIME_PM_OPS() evaluate to nothing, so these functions appear
unused to the compiler in this configuration.
Use the modern SYSTEM_SLEEP_PM_OPS and RUNTIME_PM_OPS macros to resolve
these warnings, which is what they are intended to do. Additionally,
wrap &cix_ipbloq_hda_pm in pm_ptr() to ensure the compiler can drop the
entire structure when CONFIG_PM is unset.

ocfs2: invalidate inode if i_mode is zero after block read
A panic occurs in ocfs2_unlink due to WARN_ON(inode->i_nlink == 0) when
handling a corrupted inode with i_mode=0 and i_nlink=0 in memory.
This "zombie" inode is created because ocfs2_read_locked_inode proceeds
even after ocfs2_validate_inode_block successfully validates a block that
structurally looks okay (passes checksum, signature etc.) but contains
semantically invalid data (specifically i_mode=0). The current validation
function doesn't check for i_mode being zero.
This results in an in-memory inode with i_mode=0 being added to the VFS
cache, which later triggers the panic during unlink.
Prevent this by adding an explicit check for (i_mode == 0, i_nlink == 0,
non-orphan) within ocfs2_validate_inode_block. If the check is true,
return -EFSCORRUPTED to signal corruption. This causes the caller
(ocfs2_read_locked_inode) to invoke make_bad_inode(), correctly preventing
the zombie inode from entering the cache.

ocfs2: avoid -Wflex-array-member-not-at-end warning
-Wflex-array-member-not-at-end was introduced in GCC-14, and we are
getting ready to enable it, globally.
Use the new TRAILING_OVERLAP() helper to fix the following warning:
fs/ocfs2/xattr.c:52:41: warning: structure containing a flexible array member is not at the end of another structure [-Wflex-array-member-not-at-end]
This helper creates a union between a flexible-array member (FAM) and a
set of MEMBERS that would otherwise follow it.
This overlays the trailing MEMBER struct ocfs2_extent_rec er; onto the FAM
struct ocfs2_xattr_value_root::xr_list.l_recs[], while keeping the FAM and
the start of MEMBER aligned.
The static_assert() ensures this alignment remains, and it's intentionally
placed inmediately after the related structure --no blank line in between.

ocfs2: convert remaining read-only checks to ocfs2_emergency_state
Now that the centralized `ocfs2_emergency_state()` helper is available,
refactor remaining filesystem-wide checks for `ocfs2_is_soft_readonly` and
`ocfs2_is_hard_readonly` to use this new function.
To ensure strict consistency with the previous behavior and guarantee no
functional changes, the call sites continue to explicitly return -EROFS
when the emergency state is detected. This standardizes the check logic
while preserving the existing error handling flow.

ocfs2: add ocfs2_emergency_state helper and apply to setattr
Patch series "ocfs2: Refactor read-only checks to use
ocfs2_emergency_state", v4.
Following the fix for the `make_bad_inode` validation failure (syzbot ID:
b93b65ee321c97861072), this separate series introduces a new helper
function, `ocfs2_emergency_state()`, to improve and centralize read-only
and error state checking.
This is modeled after the `ext4_emergency_state()` pattern, providing a
single, unified location for checking all filesystem-level emergency
conditions. This makes the code cleaner and ensures that any future
checks (e.g., for fatal error states) can be added in one place.
This series is structured as follows:
1. The first patch introduces the `ocfs2_emergency_state()` helper
(currently checking for -EROFS) and applies it to `ocfs2_setattr`
to provide a "fail-fast" mechanism, as suggested by Albin
Babu Varghese.
2. The second patch completes the refactoring by converting all
remaining read-only checks throughout OCFS2 to use this new helper.
This patch (of 2):
To centralize error checking, follow the pattern of other filesystems like
ext4 (which uses `ext4_emergency_state()`), and prepare for future
enhancements, this patch introduces a new helper function:
`ocfs2_emergency_state()`.
The purpose of this helper is to provide a single, unified location for
checking all filesystem-level emergency conditions. In this initial
implementation, the function only checks for the existing hard and soft
read-only modes, returning -EROFS if either is set.
This provides a foundation where future checks (e.g., for fatal error
states returning -EIO, or shutdown states) can be easily added in one
place.
This patch also adds this new check to the beginning of `ocfs2_setattr()`.
This ensures that operations like `ftruncate` (which triggered the
original BUG) fail-fast with -EROFS when the filesystem is already in a
read-only state.

checkpatch: add uninitialized pointer with __free attribute check
Uinitialized pointers with __free attribute can cause undefined behavior
as the memory randomly assigned to the pointer is freed automatically when
the pointer goes out of scope. add check in checkpatch to detect such
issues.

ocfs2: fix kernel BUG in ocfs2_find_victim_chain
syzbot reported a kernel BUG in ocfs2_find_victim_chain() because the
`cl_next_free_rec` field of the allocation chain list (next free slot in
the chain list) is 0, triggring the BUG_ON(!cl->cl_next_free_rec)
condition in ocfs2_find_victim_chain() and panicking the kernel.
To fix this, an if condition is introduced in ocfs2_claim_suballoc_bits(),
just before calling ocfs2_find_victim_chain(), the code block in it being
executed when either of the following conditions is true:
1. `cl_next_free_rec` is equal to 0, indicating that there are no free
chains in the allocation chain list
2. `cl_next_free_rec` is greater than `cl_count` (the total number of
chains in the allocation chain list)
Either of them being true is indicative of the fact that there are no
chains left for usage.
This is addressed using ocfs2_error(), which prints
the error log for debugging purposes, rather than panicking the kernel.

liveupdate: luo_core: fix redundant bound check in luo_ioctl()
The kernel test robot reported a Smatch warning:
kernel/liveupdate/luo_core.c:402 luo_ioctl() warn: unsigned 'nr' is
never less than zero.
This occurs because 'nr' is unsigned and LIVEUPDATE_CMD_BASE is currently
defined as 0, making the check (nr < LIVEUPDATE_CMD_BASE) always false.
Remove the explicit lower bound check. The logic remains correct because
'nr' is unsigned; if nr is less than LIVEUPDATE_CMD_BASE, the expression
(nr - LIVEUPDATE_CMD_BASE) will wrap around to a large positive value.
This will inevitably be larger than ARRAY_SIZE(luo_ioctl_ops) and be
caught by the upper bound check.

ocfs2: validate inline xattr size and entry count in ocfs2_xattr_ibody_list
Add comprehensive validation of inline xattr metadata in
ocfs2_xattr_ibody_list() to prevent out-of-bounds access and
use-after-free bugs when processing corrupted inline xattrs.
The patch adds two critical validations:
1. Validates i_xattr_inline_size before use:
- Ensures it does not exceed block size
- Ensures it is at least large enough for xattr header
- Prevents pointer arithmetic with corrupted size values that could
point outside the inode block
2. Validates xattr entry count (xh_count):
- Calculates maximum entries that can fit in the inline space
- Rejects counts that exceed this limit
- Prevents out-of-bounds array access in subsequent code
Without these checks, a corrupted filesystem with invalid inline xattr
metadata can cause the code to access memory beyond the allocated space.
For example:
- A corrupted i_xattr_inline_size of 0 would cause header pointer
calculation to point past the end of the block
- A corrupted xh_count of 22 with inline_size of 256 would cause
array access 7 entries beyond the 15 that actually fit (the syzbot
reproducer used xh_count of 20041), leading to use-after-free when
accessing freed memory pages
The validation uses the correct inline_size (from di->i_xattr_inline_size)
rather than block size, ensuring accurate bounds checking for inline
xattrs specifically.

ocfs2: check tl_used after reading it from trancate log inode
The fuzz image has a truncate log inode whose tl_used is bigger than
tl_count so it triggers the BUG in ocfs2_truncate_log_needs_flush() [1].
As what the check in ocfs2_truncate_log_needs_flush() does, just do same
check into ocfs2_get_truncate_log_info() when truncate log inode is
reading in so we can bail out earlier.

dm pcache: fix segment info indexing
Segment info indexing also used sizeof(struct) instead of the
4K metadata stride, so info_index could point between slots and
subsequent writes would advance incorrectly. Derive info_index
from the pointer returned by the segment meta search using
PCACHE_SEG_INFO_SIZE and advance to the next slot for future
updates.

4K metadata stride, so gc_percent updates from dmsetup message
were written between slots and lost after reboot. Use
PCACHE_CACHE_INFO_SIZE in get_cache_info_addr() and align
info_index with the slot returned by pcache_meta_find_latest().

dm-pcache: advance slot index before writing slot
In dm-pcache, in order to ensure crash-consistency, a dual-copy scheme
is used to alternately update metadata, and there is a slot index that
records the current slot. However, in the write path the current
implementation writes directly to the current slot indexed by slot
index, and then advances the slot — which ends up overwriting the
existing slot, violating the crash-consistency guarantee.
This patch fixes that behavior, preventing metadata from being
overwritten incorrectly.
In addition, this patch add a missing pmem_wmb() after memcpy_flushcache().
